Mystery Character

Random discovery in Microsoft Word today. I was selecting some text and at the point of having all the text selected, the black selection background mysteriously grew to include an extra character at the end of the line. Initially I thought it was just a space, but there are no characters (spaces included) at the end of my sentence.
Update:
Thanks to Richard for solving the mystery. See his explanation in the comments section.

If you turn on the option to show paragraph markings (button with ‘¶’ on the standard tool bar), you see that it is selecting the end paragraph marker.
More frustrating in MS Word is how at some point it decides that you want the whole word selected rather than just from the point where you began selecting. In your example, “Why” is completely selected instead of just the “hy” where the selection was started.
