MSN Live Messenger – Useless Status

With MSN, you can set a status that is viewable to others on your buddy list. The status is similar to an away message on other instant messenger services, but allows you to set more than simply away. The options include
MSN Live Messenger Status
Now in the context of a work environment, what’s the point of setting a “Busy” status. Shouldn’t you always be “Busy”? If you are that busy that you don’t want to be bothered, why not sign off?

Also, who other than stalkers uses the “Appear Offline” status?

I agree with you on many of these points. Come on, really, if someone marked themselves as “busy” would that prevent you from contacting them? No, you just preface your comments with, “I know your busy, but…”

You’re limiting the value of the “appear offline” mode. This is a great IM status to use when you *are* busy. It allows you to contact those who you need to contact, but hides your online status from the casual interrupter.

Wow, good article. Seems for me Appear Offline mode is where you wanted to do a private chat with your girlfriend so that you won’t be bothered by someone else, and the Busy mode is where you are playing a non-minimized games or writing something important.

    Sorry for the Bad English.

Busy is used when you’re able to chat but can’t reply right away. It lets your co-workers know you’re around, just busy (as the status implies).

Online is when you’re available right away and can answer immediate questions or just engage in a social chat (I don’t know about your work environment but we happen to have times when there’s less to do).

Appear offline is, as stated, used when you need to get on an chat with a co-worker on the weekend or perhaps your vacation and not get flooded with questions from other people.

Corporate IM is so much more than chat, it’s just as much about presence information for instance.
